/7/7;1S for Demorats & Independents Clements TO: JIM FROM: TO4/ RE: HOUSE SPEAKERS FOR CLEMENTS Governor Cements Campaign 805 Brazos Austin, Texas 78701 512-472-1982 August 12, 1982 Jim, I spoke with Skipper today regarding the idea of a group of former House Speakers endorsing WPC with Speaker Clayton as a pos- sible chairman. He thought the idea was excellent. We discussed contact persons to add to our group of Barnes, Carr and Tunnell. Skipper suggested the following: 1. Clayton - WPC, JBF, Tom, etc. 2. Rayford Price - JBF call 3. Durwood Manford - Governor Connally or possibly Lyndon Olson, Jr., former House member from Waco who was appointed to the State Board of Insurance by Briscoe and reappointed by WPC. Manford, who is on the State Board of Insurance, is up for reappointment in January, 1983. Skipper then suggested that I call John Ben Shepperd regarding Manford. I will do this. 4. Reuben Senterfitt - Skipper received a letter from Ben Barnes which he read to me. Barnes indicated that he would contact Senterfitt as soon as Senterfitt returned from vacation. Skipper said Mutscher could also help with Senterfitt. 5. Gus Mutscher - Skipper feels Mutscher will help where we want him to assist. Skipper feels, as I do, that a group of former Speakers, intentionally excluding Mutscher, is not appropriate. Skipper feels we could, however, omit Mutscher without hurting his feelings and still use him to help with the "courthouse crowd. Skipper was going to "feel him out" this afternoon. 6 James Turman - Skipper is going to talk with John Ben Shepperd and Mutscher about Turman. Pol adv paid by The Governor Clernen Committee, Tom e.
