Priddy 1200 Mercantile Flank Building Dallas, Texas 75201 Dear Ashley: AREA CODE 214 741-5137 Please don't take this letter personally because you know I think the world of you, but would like to express some thoughts here. First of all, I would be delighted to serve on the Energy Production Council if the Governor feels that I can made a worthwhile contribution. Naturally after 25 years of experience in the business and having served on the National Petroleum Council and other committees, in addition to making speeches on the subject, I feel that I have some constructive thoughts to offer in connection with the energy problems of this country. However, I like to participate in an organization only if I feel that the parties involved think that I can make a worthwhile contribution. I do not like, nor do I feel it necessary, to buy myself into some organization. Therefore, it bothers me that the statement would be made "membership in each council will be reserved to those who contribute $5,000 or more to Governor Clements Committee". In summary, I have felt that Bill Clements would make an excellent governor and was one of his early contributors. I have contributed to him in the past and will continue to make substantive contributions. Am also willing to serve on any committee for free where he thinks I might make a contribution. To me a person's money contributions to political causes should be based on financial ability, whether it is $2,000 or $6,000. Thus, Ashley, I would be delighted to serve on the committee on the above basis but would have to pass if there is a fixed contribution amount required. As stated earlier, I think the world of you but I think this approach should be recon5idered. Yours very truly, Cary M.
