4/1) • WILLIAM P. CLEMENTS, JR. GOVERNOR • • Dear : OFFICE OF THE GOVERNOR STATE CAPITOL AUSTIN, TEXAS 78711 October 2, 1980 Thank you for your recent letter concerning my remark about being "born again." I have reread John 1-16 and reminded myself of the story of Jesus and Nicodemus. As you know, different Christian denominations use a variety of terms for salvation as, become a believer, saved, regenerated by the Spirit, and born again. In my own Episcopal denomination, I have generally used "saved" to describe my condition. I assure you that no malicious or irreverent intent was meant by my remark which was made in a light vein and in a relaxed setting. Unfortunately, the remark was magnified by news media attention. I wish to assure you that I have trusted Jesus Christ as my Lord and Savior. My belief in God is total. I sincerely appreciate your thoughts and prayers as I continue to serve the citizens of Texas. WPCJr:lpc Sincerely, William P. Clements, Jr. Governor
