PRESS CLIPS 718 WEST 5th ST AUSTIN, TEXAS 78701 477115 Democrat Sherman, Texas SEP 2 6 1979 overnor taunted by pickets EL PASO, Texas (AP) — Gov. Bill Clements, who was shoved and taunted 44. by Chicano demonstrators here, has called for an improved good neighbor 16, policy with Mexico. Clements was pushed back by pickets when he tried to shake hands with some of the 23 persons demonstrating outside a reception hosted by the League of United Latin American Citizens. The protestors, members of the Chicano Coalition for Economic Justice and the Campaign for the Preservation of the Barrios, carried signs calling Clements a "racist" and contended some LULAC officials had "prostituted" Chicano interests. Coalition member Carmen Felix said the group was protesting Clements' ties with the Southwest Border Com- mission. She said the commission looks out for industries that exploit poor Chicanos. ie ts, in his first speech since his return from his Eastern European tour, spoke at a Chamber of Commerce banquet later Tuesday, commenting on — Arizona Gov. Bruce Babbitt's recent remarks on the Alamo. Governor's smile meets a sneer "It's time we started talking about things like undocumented workers, the Governor fill Clements smiles and tries to shake hands with Southwestern Border Commission. Pickets marched outside a drug traffic, exchanges of agricultural products and industrial development — instead of bad mouthing Texans and the Alamo as the governor of Arizona seems so intent on doing," said Clements. . Clements said he would meet the governor of Arizona in Los Angeles today and "I guarantee you I'll tell Gov. Babbitt that when I see him. "I would just say that the heroes of the land — anglo and Hispanic alike — were fighting for the kind of freedom that allows Gov. Babbitt to say what he likes." Babbitt had said the Alamo sym- bolizes everthing that is wrong in U.S. and Mexican relations. Babbit said for Texans the Alamo symbolizes the cradle of liberty, but to Mexicans it is a symbol of a nation "plundered by overbearing gringo neighbors." However, he said later his remarks only served to show that while to him the Alamo is a sacred symbol of freedom, to Mexicans it could be viewed differently. Clements also commented on Texas Attorney General Mark White's threat of a lawsuit. White has said he will sue PEMEX, Mexico's state controlled oil monopoly, and Sedco, an oil well drilling firm founded by Clements, for damages connected with the oil spill from an off- shore well in the Bay of Campeche. demonstrators protesting the governor's involvement in the reception hostedbythe Leagueof UnitedLatinAmericanCitizens.
