Bill Clements Wednesday assured Texas delegates he was "not shut out" of the selection process that resulted in Ronald Reagan asking the GOP convention to choose George Bush as his running mate. "We talked strategy and tactics and vice presi- dent candidates," Clements said of the three-and- a-half-hour session he had with Reagan Tuesday. night and an hour-long meeting with Republican - National Chairman Bill Brock Wednesday mor- ning. The Texas delegation was split on the question of a vice president, Chet Upham, state GOP chair- man, said. Reagan supporters favored the more conservative Jack Kemp and former Bush delegates pushed for the former U.N. am- bassador's selection, he said. A spattering of delegates favored long-shot can- didates like John Connally, Howard Baker and Clements, Upham said. Clements did announce that Reagan would make three or four visits to Texas in the fall, but only one date has been firmly set — a statewide swing with stops in San Antonio, Corpus Christi, the Rio Grande Valley and Houston with a $1,000 per plate fund-raising dinner Sept. 16. Reagan Monday will name Bill Timmons as the political director of the national campaign, Clements said. Clements will report to Timmons, as he is chairman of the Texas for Reagan Com- mittee. Clements also said he will extend his cam- paigning for Reagan in the fall out of the state and would visit Louisiana, Arkansas, Mississippi and other "neighboring areas, friendly areas" on in- vitation. Clements was asked who was financing his trip to Detroit and said "I think that is a crazy question" and refused to answer. Jon Ford, press secretary to the governor, said the state was pay- ing a "prorated share" of the governor's airplane and the remainder of the trip was being paid for by the governor.
