OFFICE OF GOVERNOR WILLIAM P. CLEMENTS JR. December 3, 1980 For Immediate Release: Governor Bill Clements today announced his support of an emergency increase in benefits for retired teachers and retired state employees. The Governor said the proposed emergency appropriation to both the Teacher Retirement System and State Employees Retirement System would finance a 3.4 per cent annuity increase effective next February 1 for those who retired prior to August 31, 1979. He will submit the proposal to the Legislature when it convenes next month. "This emergency increase, along with whatever increase is appropriated by the Legislature for the 1962-1923 biennium, should provide much needed and well deserved relief for those individuals who have completed long and productive careers in public education and state government," Governor Clements stated. The Governor earlier announced he will seek a 3.4 per cent emergency pay raise for active state employees. "Inflation is creating grave hardships for working and retired citizens alike," Governor Clements said. "Obviously, these hardships become most severe for retired persons on fixed incomes. I am, therefore, expanding my commitment to an emergency pay raise for state employees to include corresponding benefits for retired teachers and state governmental personnel as well. It is my hope that, in the future, we can attain levels of increases for our public employees commensurate with those in the private sector."
