January 23, 1981 For immediate release: Governor Bill Clements today confirmed he intends to appoint former Governor Preston Smith of Lubbock to a vacancy on the Texas College and University System Coordinating Board . The Governor Monday will ask the Senate to confirm Smith's appointment to fill the unexpired term of Tom B. Rhodes of Dallas, who resigned upon appointment to the Board of Regents of The University of Texas System. The term extends until August 31, 1985. Smith, 68, served two terms as governor, from January 21, 1969 - January 16, 1973. He is a former lieutenant governor, senator and member of the House of Representatives. Smith is chairman of the board of West Texas Savings. He received his bachelor's degree from Texas Tech University. He and his wife, Ima, have a son and daughter.
