CONFIDENTIAL TO: William P. Clements, Jr. FROM Jim Francis DATE: September 21, 1982 RE: Eddie Chiles Bill Meier called me Monday afternoon to report a development that occurred following the Ft. Worth rally last Saturday at the L-S Ranch All Republican candidates below you and Strake met at Fran and Eddie's house following the event. The bottom line of the f$eeting is that Fran and Eddie have a re d t ar...1=4LP i an want to put together 1,m4i)a,000 for th "rest of ". This slate advertising will be put together by Arthur Finklestein and will be negative in its nature. Meier is concerned with: 1. Being thrown in with the rest of the slate. 2. Controlling Finklestein in the nature of the advertising. Bill Meier very much needs the exposure and does not want to look a "gift horse" in the mouth; yet, he thinks Strake has somehow gotten to Eddie and Fran, and he thinks that it hurts him being lumped in with the other candidates (I agree). Do you have any thoughts and do you want to do anything about this situation? cc: Peter O'Donnell, Jr. rk- eLw" 644°'''41": .34.°9`. emososir..-
