qv September 23, 1982 William Clements, Governor Mark White, Attorney General State Capitol Austin, TX 78701 Gentlemen: As the Citizens Party candidate for Governor, I have requested to be a participant in theelte League of Women Voters fall debate programs. Citizens Party of Texas • 1507 Wethersfield Road Austin, Texas 78703 (512) 476-4750 Our party is new, young, and as yet unpublicized. The League has denied our request. In the spirit of democratic freedom of expression, I am asking you today to boycott these debates. The free exchange of ideas brought about the American Revolution. While I have always respected the League of Women Voters as a bastion of these freedoms, I am now of the opinion that the League is a serious threat to the freedom which has brought our democracy this far. Therefore, I am asking your sincere consideration in this matter as the leaders of the two major parties in Texas. With your assistance, I believe that you can help assure greater efforts in voter education by the League apart from expensive, slick and meaningless media campaigns which now dominate. I know you believe, with me, that all candidates who have earned the legitimate right to appear on the Texas ballot deserve the right to be heard by the voters. Thank you for your assistance and consideration in this matter. Sincerely Robert Pot• , hrman Candidate for Governor Citizens Party of Texas cc: Capitol Press Corps *labor donated*
