• Office of the Governor March 18, 1982 MEMO TO: Hilary FROM: Polly SUBJECT: Sale of Federal Lands • Austin, Texas 78711 Phone (512) 475-2131 From various sources, I have gleaned the following information: There are 84 million acres of Wilderness areas, 72 million acres of National Parks 80 million acres of wildlife refuges and 540 million acres designated for multiple use. Multiple use means grazing, mineral leasing and exploration, and forestry. Examples of federal property that can be sold are land in downtown Las Vegas, a town in Wyoming which is having a population boom because of coal mining, and the town can't grow because it is surrounded by federally owned land, many ranches in New Mexico and Colorado lease most of their land from the feds. The National Realtors Association is going to begin a PR campaign promoting sale of federal lands.
