• WILLIAM P. CLEMENTS, JR. GOVERNOR OFFICE OF THE GOVERNOR STATE CAPITOL AUSTIN, TEXAS 78711 March 7, 1980 Mrs. Jane Huffman Principal, C.W. Cline Primary School 505 Briarwood Friendswood, Texas 77546 Dear Mrs. Huffman: I have been most impressed with the nearly a thousand letters I have received from the children of both Westwood Elementary and Cline Primary Schools on the flooding problems of Friendswood. I share the deep personal concerns expressed in those letters, and have made a commitment to help in whatever way I can. I have invited thirteen of those students, along with their parents, to come to Austin on Wednesday, March 19 to personally discuss their concerns with me and my staff. I would like to extend that invitation to you, also. I hope to meet with the group at 10:30, and have asked several of my top staff members to provide a more detailed briefing afterwards. I have also arranged a special tour of the Capitol Building between 11:30 and noon, and about 1:30 a tour of the Department of Public Safety headquarters. The DPS tour will include a visit to the underground emergency communications center which operated during the Friendswood flooding last year. The group should be able to depart around 2:30, and possibly be home before dark. I wish I could personally talk with each of the children who wrote, and hope they understand that this is impossible. Instead, I have invited these thirteen students to represent their classmates and to share their experience upon returning. As a thank you to all the children who took the time to write, I have enclosed a letter which I hope you will convey to them. Thank you for the assistance you have provided my staff in coordinating this visit, and I look forward to seeing you in Austin. Sincerely, William P. C emen s, Jr. WPCJr:lpc
