OFFICE OF GOVERNOR WILLIAM P. CLEMENTS JR. February 13, 1981 For Immediate Release: Governor Bill Clements today asked governmental and private entities to assist in efforts to relieve tension between American fishermen and Vietnamese refugee fishermen along the Texas Gulf Coast. The Governor sent letters to the U.S. Coast Guard, the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, Bishops of the Roman Catholic Church and to several voluntary agencies responsible for the resettlement of refugees requesting their assistance. Governor Clements said he advanced a broad-based plan of action that hopefully will alleviate tensions. "I am confident that with the coordinated efforts of these entities, the situation along the Gulf Coast can be resolved to the satisfaction of all parties involved," Governor Clements stated. The Governor's plan is a continuation of efforts he began more than a year ago with forming of a state task force on refugee resettlement. (Copies of the Governor's letters are attached).
