OFFICE OF THE ONERNOR FOR UNIEDIATE RELEASE JULY 28, 1989 C1WTACT: E BASRR ROSSANNA SALAZAR (512) 463-1826 CrIJERNOR NAMES NEW DI RECTOR OF BUDGET AND PLANNING AUSTIN -- Governor Bill Clements today announced the selection of Sheila Beckett of Austin as director of the Governor's Office of Budget and Planning. Beckett, 36, has served as deputy director of the office since January 1987. She succeeds Ron Lindsey, who has accepted the post of executive director of the Texas Department of Human Services. "Sheila brings to the office a strong working knowledge of state govern- ment, especially the budgetary process," Clements said. "She is a valuable asset to my office, and I am delighted that she has agreed to take up this challenge." As director, Beckett will oversee an office that conducts research and policy development on a variety of state issues, formulates the governor's budget recommendations, conducts management audits of state agencies and administers the state's Council of Governments program. The office also manages the federal Energy Conservation Program and oil overcharge restitutionary funds. Before she joined the governor's staff, Beckett was a section manager in the Economic Analysis Center at the Comptroller's Office. Prior to that she was a senior budget examiner for the Legislative Pudget Board, where she worked for nine years. She has also worked for the Texas House and the Public Employees Study Commission. Beckett holds a master's degree from the LBJ School of Public Affairs and a bachelor's degree in political science from Texas AW University. -- 30 --
