MAY 1 5 1979 OFFICE OF GOVERNOR WILLIAM P. CLEMENTS, JR. May 15, 1979 For Immediate Release: Governor Clements issued the following statement concerningthe House vote to override his veto of HB 2153: "I am disappointed that the House voted to override my veto of legislation allowing a single county to exempt itself from our uniform wildlife regulations. "I remain convinced that my decision was correct, and that it is supported by the public. "As I said in my veto message, if the legislature continues to exempt counties one-at-a-time from regulation by the Parks and Wildlife Department, there can be no uniformity in this area--but, in fact, chaos. "The final chapter is not written. I am hopeful that the Senate will support my stand. At any rate, I will continue to oppose the addition of other counties to the exempt list. There are several other counties that have similar legislation. If the legislature passes them, I will veto each bill as it comes to my desk. "In concept, this type legislation is very poor management practice. We cannot operate state government on a helter-skelter, catch-as-catch-can basis. The legislature should settle down and stop game playing. It is a sad waste of time to spend more than an hour wrangling over a matter of this magnitude during the crucial final two weeks of the legislative session."
