Clements, Jr. December 27, 1979 For Immediate Release: Governor Bill Clements today said that response to the Texas 00 long-range planning project has been "even better than I had Governor Clements Clements made the statement in announcing that Lieutenant Governor Bill Hobby and House Speaker Billy Clayton have agreed to serve on the Texas 2000 seven- person steering committee. The Governor also announced that three state agencies already have agreed to assign full-tire personnel to assist the project director, Dr. Victor Arnold of the University of Texas at Austin. Governor Clements serves as chairman. "The response of these state officials and state agencies has been remarkable and even better than I had expected at this early date. (The project was announced on November 9.) I certainly am pleased by their willing support," the Governor said. "The involvement of Lieutenant Governor Hobby and House Speaker Clayton in this project rounds out the kind of unified, top-level support necessary to ensure that it gets serious attention throughout state government," he said. "With the top leadership and resources of our state behind it, Texas 2000 will make significant and much-needed progress in preparing our state for the challenges and problems of the 1980's and the remainder of the century." Governor Clements said that the participating agencies include the Comptroller's Office, the General Land Office, and the Texas Advisory Commission on Intergovernmental Relations. He also said that several other agencies have expressed interest in assisting with the project. Other organizations, including the Texas Industrial Commission, UT-Austin, Texas A&M University, and the Texas Research League are helping identify issues, and the expertise and information bases within their respective institutions. Other members of the steering committee include the Governor, Dr. Walt Rostow of the University of Texas, Ed Vetter, executive director of the Texas Energy and Natural Resources Advisory Council, and Dr. Paul Wrotenbery and Doug Brown of the Governor's staff.
