• WILLIAM P. CLEMENTS, JR. GOVERNOR STATE OF TEXAS OFFICE OF THE GOVERNOR AUSTIN, TEXAS 7 8 711 November 12, 1990 Dr. Don Johnson, Director National Institute of Standards and Technology Manufacturing Technology Program Meteorology Building, Room B-112 Gaithersburg, MA 20899 Dear Dr. Johnson: I would like to apprise you of my strong support for the Texas proposal to create a Texas Manufacturing Technology Center. Texas has one of the largest advanced research funds in the nation and maintains the third largest pool of scientists and engineers. Our proposed Texas Manufacturing Technology Center would unite Texas State Technical Institute, the University of Texas System, and the Texas A&M University System. This alliance would provide the infrastructure to transfer new technologies to small and medium size firms, allowing them to become competitive in a global economy. Innovative projects similar to the Manufacturing Technology Center have selected Texas as their location after nationwide searches. These include MCC, Sematech, and the Superconducting Super Collider. Their progress and success can be attributed, in part, to the financial commitment of their Texas hosts. The Manufacturing Technology Center would also find that support from Texas industry and Texas government. We welcome the opportunity to have a Manufacturing Technology Center in the state and look forward to assisting you in evaluating Texas as a location. Sincerely, 4R• William P. Clements, Jr. Governor WPC:MMS/cap
