S WILLIAM P. CLEMENTS, JR. GOVERNOR //2 3 4// Dear //5//: STATE OF TEXAS OFFICE OF THE GOVERNOR AUSTIN, TEXAS 7 8 711 January 21, 1988 15.03 Don't Mess w/Texas In State The governor has received your letter and asked that I respond. Prior to the series of advertisements you mentioned, Texas was having a difficult time controlling its litter problem. Previous anti-litter campaigns were aimed at children and conservationists; however, recent studies indicated that young men between 18 and 24 were chiefly responsible for littering. An advertising campaign was targeted to this group and "Don't Mess With Texas" was born. Throughout the country it has received many awards including the Effie, the Take Pride in America award, the Keep America Beautiful award, and various others. More importantly than the awaras is the effectiveness of this campaign: a 29% decrease in littering the first year. When you see these signs, you can take pride in the results of this campaign. Thank you for taking the time to write to the governor on this matter. Sincerely, Cecile E. Ingram Constituent Services CE1/1s •
