Blind Copies sent to: Ernest Angelo Chester Upham Fred Meyer George Bayoud Dary Stone November 19, 1981 The President The White House Washington, D. C., 20500 My dear Mr. President: I have had several discussions with members of your staff concerning holding the 1934 National Convention for the Republican Party in Dallas, Texas. I have not had any discussions regarding this issue with the Republican leadership in Dallas, the Mayor, the City Council Members of Dallas, the officials of the Convention Center, or any members of the Chamber of Commerce. I felt such discussions would be inappropriate until I had written you and received from you a signal as to whether or not you wanted this matter pursued. I am convinced that the facilities in Dallas are excellent, if not the best in the country. I am confident that Dallas can supply the necessary hotel accommodations and certainly Dallas hospitality is well known, especially to you. I recall that the metropolitan area of Dallas gave you the biggest victory margin of any metro- politan comunity in the country and as you well know Dallas would receive you with open arms. I am writing in order to get a signal from you as to what you would like me to do. We would like for you to be in Texas for the National Convention and more particularly in Dallas. However, I strongly believe that this is your call. If you will advise me your wishes I will then proceed accordingly. You're doing great! Keep up the good work! With warm regards and great respect. Most sincerely, William P. Clements, Jr. Governor WPC,Jr.:jh Copy to: Mr. Roger Allen Moore Room 2400, 225 Franklin Street Boston, Massachusetts, 02110
