cc: Dr. Peter T. Flawn 411 August 7, 1981 Mr. James A. Michener St. Michaels, Maryland 21663 Dear Mr. Michener: It was a pleasure to have you with us last week and I hope you found things in Austin and at the University both interesting and promising. May I add my own hopes to the many others already convyyed to you that you will give serious consideration to the project we discussed. At Dr. Flawn's suggestion, I am sending you two works of reference about Texas. I hope you find them helpful, both in considering the project and in executing it once you have made your decision. The Hand- book of Texas appeared in two volumes in 1952, to which a third "supple- mentary" volume was added in 1976. It is a unique compendium of everything in and about Texas, assential to anyone doing research in Texas history. The Texas Almanac is a biennial volume published by the Dallas News. It is more nearly up-to-date and its information supplements that in the Handbook Together they will be useful additions to your library. Meanwhile, I am taking the liberty of entering a subscription in your name for the Texas Monthly. It is a very interesting magazine, well-designed, and cleverly written, and it often provides a perspective on Texas and the Texas commumhty that is found nowhere else. I've asked that your subscrip- tion begin with the August issue which contains three pieces that I call to your attention. One is the editorial note by Gregory Curtis on Pages 5-6; one is the cover story on the "Country Boy," and one is a bibliography by A.C. Greene which he calls "The Fifty Best Texas Books." Its almost as if this issue was designed for your particular purposes. Hope to see you soon again. ew Sincerely yours, William S. Livingston
