Through a grant funded by the Governor's Criminal Justice Division, all BPP parole officers will receive 40 hours of in-service training at the Institute of Contemporary Corrections and the Behavioral Sciences at Sam Houston State University beginning this month. Staff will be divided into four groups to attend the sessions scheduled for August 13-17, Sentember 10-14, October 22-26, and November 12-16. Project director Henry Johnson, Dan Carey, assistant project director, and a nroun of agency Resource Parole Officers have been working on the project with Marcus Kenter, SHSU, all year to put together an outstanding program. The session will include topics such as trends in parole, rights of the ex-offender, legal liabilities of parole officers, time and caseload management, supervisory and leadership skills, on-site hearing effec- tiveness, counseling and interviewing techniques, crisis intervention, drug addiction, and others. An entire day of the program is set aside for touring units of the Department of Corrections. Optional seminars are being offered on the use of discretion in parole supervision.
