RECEIVD 'APR 3 0 WILLIAM P. CLEMENTS, JR. GOVERNOR ••°' OFFICE OF THE GOVERNOR STATE CAPITOL AUSTIN, TEXAS 78711 MEMORANDUM DATE: April 29, 1980 TO:David Dean FROM: Nadine W. Francis Governor's Office for Volunteer Services David, I just talked with Warren Heagy, an attorney in Odessa. He said that even the old hard-line Demos - and he said, "I am one of them" - really appreciated the Governor coming to Odessa. It had a very, very good impact both for John and for the Governor. Heagy said they like a man who remembers a friend when that friend needs him. Only once or twice before has Heagy voted for a Republican. He said to tell the Governor "if I can ever help him, I certainly will." David, even some of Green's staunchest foes I talked with after our trip out there did not fault the Governor for doing what he felt was right. I'm telling you they like $ even when they disagree with the cause! Absentee voting is in Green's favor four to one and a big turnout there. There is a big undecided vote in the phone bank calling - 40% - but, of those who will say - two to one are Green. Others I talked with last night said Green's TV and newspaper ads are picking up momentum. Everyone seems to think it's a toss-up at this point. Warren Burnett and Dan Hemphill say Holmes will win without a runoff. The third man in the race is picking up a little also. John is working hard now and feeling better about it all.
