Clements, Jr. The Deputy Secretary of Defense Washington, D. C. 20301 Dear Mr. Secretary: Ford Motor Company The American Road Dearborn, Michigan 48121 May 23, 1974 I want to thank you for inviting me to participate in one of the most interesting and informative meetings that I have ever had the pleasure to attend. Last Tuesday's meeting proved most enlightening and helpful to me in gaining a better understanding of the major defense problems facing the country. I was most impressed with the high degree of professionalism demonstrated by you and your other distinguished Department of Defense associates, and I want to congratulate you personally on the frank and articulate manner in which you answered questions and handled the discussion subjects. In response to your comments near the end of the meeting as to whether there is anything specific that should be given further consideration, I have one suggestion that might justify further study. As discussed by Mal Currie and the group, there appears to be a need for a more clear-cut governmental policy with regard to the transfer of U. S. technology overseas, particularly the transfer of defense related technology to our allies and other countries. A study group consisting of representatives from Government, industry and the scientific community might be helpful in this effort. Thank you once again for a most memorable day. Please do not hesitate to call me if I can be of any assistance to you and the Department of Defense in carrying out your mission. Sincerely, cc C to Ljori..PE d' O44L bointi 4111,17, gel
