The Texas commemora- tion of Preservation Week part of a national pro- gram sponsored by the National Trust for historic Preservation, with local Leadership from the Texas ftistorical Commission and many community heritage week organizations across the state. Co. Clements noted that the homes and buildings constructed by our forefathers represent the investment of their skills, energy, and financial resources, and that many of these structures merit preservation and con- tinued appreciation.. The conservation of such land- marks bestows cultural, social, and economic benefits to present and future generations of our society, according to the governor. Gov. Clements also observed that the Economic Recovery Tax •Act of 1981 has establish- ed tax c.redits for the cer- tified rehabilitation of historic buildings. The governor's proclamation further suggested that the reuse of older buildings can help solve such con- temporary ploblems as poor housing, depressed inner cities, declining small towns, and energy shortage.
