WHY SEPARATE CAMPAIGNS Historically, Texans view candidates individually and vote independently - they vote for the man. Polls show Texas voters identify themselves like this: Republicans 20% Democrats 35% Independents 45% Thousands of new voters are moving to Texas who are independent, but basically conservative, and tied to neither party. We must have a majority of these voters to win. Separate campaigns allow a voter to work for the candidate of his choice without feeling he is endorsing other candidates he may not wish to support. In a phone program the message will become garbled and have less impact if more than one candidate is mentioned. The question arises of which voter to turn out where you have different responses for different candidates. In 1978, a post elec- tion survey showed that 25% of the voters who were for Tower were not for Clements and 25% of the voters who were for Clements were not for Tower. In 1978 we only won by 16,000 votes and Tower had a smaller vote. The money for this campaign has come from thousands of contribu- tors. Gov. Clements must not break faith with them be diverting it to other candidates.
