(Governor's controversial statement) The press emphasized Gov. ClementsIstatement on South Padre Island August 10 that the oil spill problem at that time was not having serious impact in Texas.. .that "it's a big to-do about nothing at this point." The Governor was correct in stating Texas "at that point" was not really hurt.. .that a lot of people were still enjoying beaches which showed little sign of oil...and that the environment"was not suffering." Governor Clements went on to say, though the news media took little note of his qualification,that: "It could get much worse. The wind, the currents could indeed cause a real problem for us. There is no question about it. Hopefully, we will get a turn around in the winds the latter part of this month. I hope that is what happens. Time is on our side.. .Meanwhile, we will cross our fingers and offer a little prayer and hope for the best."
