(Copy attached.) The letter did not request a response from any of the Governors. You have received responses from nine Governors, five of whom have joined you in the effort to retain the LEAA program at its current funding level. (Copies attached.) They are Ella T. Grasso, Connecticut; George R. Ariyoshi, Hawaii; Hugh L. Carey, New York; James A. Rhodes, Ohio; and Dixy Lee Ray, Washington. Of the other four, William G. Milliken, Michigan, and John Y. Brown, Jr. Kentucky, have it under consideration; James R. Thompson, Illinois, made no commitment either way; and Lamar Alexander, Tennessee, is supporting the President. The National Criminal Justice Association advises that, in addition to the Governors who have written you supporting the LEAA program, there ailimmluip additional Governors and two trust territories actively engaged in the attempt to restore the LEAA program.
