OFFICE GF THE GOVERNOR FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE CONTACT: REGGIE BASHUR MARCH 5, 1987 0 -- 512/463-1826 GOVERNOR CONTINUES COMMISSION ON WOMEN, ESTABLISHES COMMISSION ON BICENTENNIAL OF U.S. CONSTITUTION AUSTIN -- Governor Bill Clements has filed executive orders continuing a statewide commission charged with examining women's issues and establishing a commission designed to coordinate the state's celebrations in commemoration of the bicentennial of the U.S. Constitution. "This administration has a sincere and firm commitment to the goal of achieving equal legal, economic, political and educational opportunities for the women of this state," Clements said after signing the order continuing the Governor's Commission for Women. The commission will consist of 29 members, each appointed by the governor to two-year terms. He will designate a chair and vice chair of the commission. As part of the executive order, the commission will be required to com- plete a written report of its findings, activities and recommendations. The Texas Commission on the Bicentennial of the United States Constitution, created by an executive order of the governor, will have 30 members. The chair and vice chair of that group also will be designated by the governor. Among the responsibilities and duties of that commission will be: -- The development and establishment of appropriate activites to commemo- rate the bicentennial event. -- To encourage private organizations to organize and participate in bicentennial activities. -- The development and coordination of programs emphasizing educational aspects of the commemoration. - -30 -
