OFFICE OF THE GOVERNOR FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE MAY 18, 1987 CONTACT: REGGIE BASHUR ROSSANNA SALAZAR W 512/463-1826 CLEMENTS APPLAUDS HOUSE FOR ABORTION BILL VOTE AUSTIN -- Governor Bill Clements today applauded the House's support of a bill that would regulate late-term abortions. Clements also praised the leadership of House Speaker Gib Lewis and Rep. Mike Millsap for their efforts in winning passage of HB 410, and urged passage of a similar bill in the Senate. "This legislation will now go to the Senate. I hope that it will quickly appear on the Senate's calendar so that it might be passed by that chamber as well," Clements said. "This legislation is very important to me and I look forward, with the Senate's help, to signing the first piece of legislation since the Roe vs. Wade decision that would regulate abortions in any way in our state. "It is time that Texas moved from being among that small minority of states with no abortion regulation and joined the vast majority that do regulate them." -- 30 --
