OFFICE OF THE GOVERNOR FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE AUGUST 19, 1987 CONTACT: REGGIE BASHUR ROSSANNA SALAZAR W 512/463-1826 CLEMENTS AIDE NAMED AS HIGHER ED LIAISON AUSTIN -- Governor Bill Clements has named Dr. Richard D. Land as his senior staff liaison to the Texas College and University System Coordinating Board, as well as to higher education institutions in general. Land is Clements' administrative assistant. Land will coordinate an analysis and review of the state's higher education system to ensure that Texans' tax dollars are being used prudently and funding a network of colleges and universities that can excel on a national level. "The governor fully understands that we face a new economic reality in Texas," said Land, referring to his appointment. "Texas can no longer afford to waste or duplicate limited economic resources. Certainly, we must maximize our resources to make certain that Texas is able to do its utmost for our citizens. "This analysis will be an intensive effort to see that resources are available to make Texas' public higher education system the best that it can be." Land, a Houston native, holds a doctorate in philosophy from Oxford University. Before he joined the Clements administration in February, Land served for almost 12 years as vice president of academic affairs at Criswell College in Dallas. --30--
