• FEB 2,3 1979 Office of Governor William P. Clements Jr. February 23, 1979 For Immediate Release: Governor Bill Clements today called on Texans to continue their support of energy conservation measures in view of the cessation of oil production in Iran. Although the nation depends on Iranian production for only five per cent of domestic needs, the shutdown can have have a significant impact on short term supplies of oil and gasoline, the governor stated. Governor Clements said he will urge state departments and agencies of state government to make a concentrated effort to reduce energy consumption in state buildings and operations. "I am now asking citizens to lower their thermostats, to make use of carpools or public transit, to observe the 55 miles per hour speed limit and to take all other appropriate measures to reduce the use of energy," the governor stated. "Although conservation can be only a part of the long-term solution to our national energy problems, it is an effec- tive tool with which to deal with the immediate situation," Governor Clements said. "The people of Texas are vitally concerned with our national energy outlook, and will continue to provide leadership in developing long-term solutions to national energy problems."
