• WILLIAM P. CLEMENTS, JR. GOVERNOR • STATE OF TEXAS OFFICE OF THE GOVERNOR AUSTIN, TEXAS 78701 Ambassador Jeane Kirkpatrick American Enterprise Institute 1150 Seventeenth Street, N. W. Washington, D. C., 20036 Dear Jeane: June 14, 1988 Confirming my telephone conversation with you this morning, I am attaching news clips from THE DALLAS MORNING NEWS, THE HOUSTON POST, THE AUSTIN AMERICAN STATESMAN, and THE FORT WORTH STAR-TELEGRAM, all of which detail my endorsement of you for Vice President on the Republican Presidential Ticket. I think the stories properly cover my statement of endorse- ment and as I told you this morning I did not make this state- ment lightly. Last Friday I had the opportunity to have a lengthy visit with Vice President Bush and received his approval of my putting forth your name for consideration as Vice President on the ticket. I hope you do not object strenuously to my doing this. I am optimistic that my initiative in this regard will catch fire and you will be the next Vice President of the United States. I cannot think of anyone more deserving and more appropriate for that very responsible position. I am proud to have the opportunity to endorse you for Vice President and Rita joins me with a full sense of enthusiasm and commitment. You will undoubtedly hear more about this possibility and I certainly intend to talk about it at every opportunity. Best wishes and warm regards! Sincerely, William P. Clements, Jr. Governor WPC,Jr.:jh Enclosures
