• • October 2, 1986 To: Governor Clements From: Ken Fairchild Lisa LeMaster Subject: Objective for Monday's Debate We have come up with an answer we virtually guarantee will be THE most quoted comment from the debate, perhaps even the headline. It ties in with your objective of "referendum on our records." Whenever Mark White makes any reference to 1982, or even to your record, PLEASE say: i "HAVE YOU NOTICED THAT MARK WHITE Ilh-gariCAMPAIGNSIN THE PAST. HE DOESN'T LIKE TO TALK ABOUT HIS RECORD. WHAT HE'D LIKE TO DO IS TO BE ABLE TO SAY ABOUT THE PAST FOUR YEARS: 'BOBBY, IT WAS ALL A BAD DREAM. IT DIDN'T REALLY HAPPEN.' (Pause) WELL, IT DID HAPPEN, AND THIS ELECTION WILL BE A REFERENDUM COMPARING MY RECORD AS GOVERNOR WITH HIS RECORD." This is very important to take the headline away from him. It should be used as an answer or in rebuttal, rather than in the opening speech, so it seems to be off the cuff and not written in advance. Look for an opportunity, but if no opportunity presents itself, please use it in the close. To be most effective, it should be said exactly as written here (the "Bobby" quote at least). ..and should not be used before Monday.
