December 17, 1980 His Excellency Joao Figueiredo President of the Planalto brasillia, Federal District Your Excellency, Mr. President of the Republic: It is my understanding that you have been invited to visit Abilene, Texas, during the early months of 1981 to receive from Abilene Christian University the "Honoris Causa" degree of DOCTOR OF LAWS. I congratulate you since this is certainly one of our outstanding universities. During your visit to Texas, I certainly hope that you will be able to spend one day as my guest. I would like very much to take you to the King Ranch and there you would be able to see their expansive operations, including horses, cattle, farm- ing, and oil, which, of course, would be so similar to the great ranches of Brazil. As soon as you have any idea when your visit will be, please let me hear from you so I can start making preparations. We will coordinate your visit with Dr. John Stevens and Dr. Ellis Long of Abilene Christian University, and with representatives of any other places you wish to visit. My wife, Rita, and I send to you and your family our warmest personal regards and look forward to having you, and, if possible, your wife as quests in our great state. Most cordially yours, William P. Clements, Jr. Governor WPC,Jr.:jh Blind Copies to: Mr. Frederick Becker Office of Brazilian Affairs U. S. Department of State 2201 "C" Street, N. W. Washington, D.
