The Governor's Criminal Justice Division has directly funded alternative education pilot projects in 35 school districts for students who otherwise would have been suspended or expelled from school. Projects were patterned after a program first tried in Pasadena ISD with TEA assistance. Thusfar a total of $3 million has been provided for projects in 19 communities serving 3500 students -- 92% of whom have been success- fully returned to the regular classroom to resume their normal studies. Funds are available again for the current school year. Grants to create or continue 17 projects have just been awarded by the Governor's Criminal Justice Division.
