TO: DATE: RE: MEMO FROM PAT OLES Office of the Governor Austin, Texas 78711 Phone (512) 475-4571 File April 17, 1981 Everett Lord 279th District Judge Interviewed Lord April 8th. Lord is a family law specialist; scholar; educator; loves to teach; mid 50's; young wife; very articulate; arrogant, good labor connections; will seek re-election in '82 on GOP ticket in WPC wishes; probably can be elected, possibly no opponent; sought Briscoe appointment in '76. Howard Richards and he are enemies. When Lord served as stand in judge he asked Richards wife in to testify in a custody case and "told her to tell the truth". This offended Richards. I asked who he supported in '78, he answered he didn't get involved. I asked him if he made any contributions to either candidate, he answered no. He contributed $200 to Hill in Oct. '78. Highly qualified, strange guy. All questions O.K. Bob Wortham says he's the best in Beaumont. Vic Rogers supports (1) Lord (2) Matheny. Tommie Byrd will go either way. Note--Lord called Ruth Hernandez later in the after- noon of 4-8-81. Said he might have contributed to Hill, can't remember but will check it out. • %!••-‘7" oar. a e.#1!
