• When Halbouty told Yount he'd stake his job on finding oil at the well, Yount told his lowest-paid em- ployee. "All right. If you're willing to gamble your job, I'm willing to stand the expense of another core." The field brought in 135 million barrels of oil. and Yount raised Hal- bouty's salary from $80 a month to $150 a month. Today, Halbouty is worth mil- lions. His company employs 100, and he operates (trilling rigs in the conti- nental United States and Alaska. About a year ago, lialhouty mar- ried for the thir:i time. His wife, Billye Stevens. is a dental technician from Mississippi. She accompanied him on a lecture tour through China a few weeks ago. His first marriage was to Lesly Carlton. who was stricken with arthritis shortly after their mar- riage. Her religious beliefs prevent- ed her from seeking treatment. and she divorced him a few years later because she said she could not be a proper wife to him. She died four years ago„ and the sharp edges of lialbouty's features still soften when he speaks of her. His second marriage, to Fay Ren- fro Kelly, ended in divorce several years ago. Halbouty, a self-acknowl- edged workaholic, said they had de- veloped different lifestyles. It was well-known during the later years of their marriage that Fay' wanted Halbouty to spend more time with her and less with work. Halbouty and Fay had one daugh- ter, Linda Fay, who is 32 and lives in Houston with her husband, Dennis Hewitt, and their two children, son Michel, 7, and daughter Meg,hann, 4. They give him more pleasure than any award he has ever received, Hal- bouty said. And he holds the highest awards granted by his peers in the fields of geology and petroleum engineer- ing, including the City of Hope's Spirit of Life Award, the Hoover Medal and the Sidney Powers Me- morial Medal. lie said all the attention he re- ceives doesn't bother him. "Mary (Stewart) and my wife tell me, `You're well-known,' "he said. "Well, I'm not conscious of the popu- larity I have.. Everybody tells me it's there, and I won't say I'm that humble that I don't want it. But I don't have the ego to sit and look at who I am." lie credits his success to his power to retain what he reads, sees and hears. And the leisure activity he craves most is locking himself up in an office, doing a little research on geology and engineering and put- ting what he's found down in words. He has only good things to say about President Reagan, the man he thinks can get the American econo- my back on track. Four more years of former President Jimmy Carter would have spelled disaster, he said. "I believe the good Lord looked down upon this country and said `OK, I'll give you one more chance. ; The last time, you came near doing yourselves in, hut you get one more chance,' " he said. Halbouty the seer has another message for Americans. Americans need to rededicate themselves to ; the principles of their forefathers, which is, basically, that the least 't government is the best govern- t ment. We can only refer to ourselves as once - underline once - a great ' country," he said. "Without unnec- essary regulation, we can again be a great country without fear of losing our liberties to an unmanageable bureaucracy that controls and regu- lates every facet of our lives." Few listened before, he said. Will they this time? 41M • am= r3 ti4) t 0 '41 '3 4 wi,., • cl) (-) 4.. tit ••••• .,./ • ims mr • 0, , C.) .6.1. ...._ 0 ; •=.: :0= 1),..
