CLEMENTS March 1, 1976 SUBJECT: House Government Operations Hearing on the GAO Studies of the Service Academies Jim McInerney, Minority Staff Member of the Subcommittee on Legislation and National Security of the House Government Operations Committee, has requested your appearance on March 17th at 10 a. m. to testify in open session on the GAO studies of the Service Academies. The Subcommittee is interested in your comments on the GAO recommendations. Mr. Mc- Inerney specified four principal areas of concern: 1. The civilian-military mix at the Service Academies. 2. The role of the Academies since the admission of women. 3. The prospects for cutti.m-..Y costs at the Academies, and 4. The prospects for cutting te rai.e cf attrition at the Acaaermes. In connection with the fourth point, it is my understanding that the GAO Report on Attrition at the Academies will be published this week. I have requested an early copy for our study. If that report raises any unexpected complications I feel certain the Subcommittee will permit us to postpone the March 17th hearing date in order to give us sufficient time to formulate our reply. My understanding is that Jack Brooks (D-Texas) will chair the hearing and that Ranking Minority Member Frank Horton (R-NY) intends to be there as well.
