I A Hutchison hits Clements for military base closings By SARA LEE T;EDE Times Herald Austin Bureau AUSTIN --- If Republicans nomi- nate Bill Clements for governor, they will nominate a man who helped close down two Texas mili- tary bases and initiate cutbacks at two others, Republican candidate Ray Hutchison charged Sunday. Hutchison, a gray-haired Dallas attorney who is stumping the state in a giant motor home. said Cle- ments was deputy secretary of the defense when the Air Force bases at Big Spring and Laredo were closed. There were severe personnel cut- backs at Kelly Air Force Base, San Antonio, Ellington near Houston, Hutchison noted. "Clements says he was in charge of the Pentagon so I assume he made these decisions." Hutchison :aid. "You can't be in charge of some decisions and not of others.- With the present hue and cry about the proposed closing of Good- fellow Air Force base at San Ange- lo.
